i need to pick up books that i know nothing aboutbecause this was fantastic. it s a loose retelling of the greek myth of hades and persephone and it was just a complete delight the art style and the vibe of the story reminded me a LOT OF studio ghibli hayao miyazaki i personally find that a lot of standalone graphic novels feel incomplete and rushed but this was amazing start to finish i loved the simplicity of the narrative and i liked the contrast in familial relationships that was presented i don t want to be bold but i think this might be my favorite graphic novel that i ve read this year i genuinely couldn t recommend this enough and now i think i might need to own a copy.

This is a VERY loose retelling of what we know of Persephone Spoilers Two factors make this story totally different from what we know 1 Hades is long dead 2 Persephone is a child It makes for an interesting mythology remix The art is charming it reminds me of a rougher Adventure Time This one was an impulse buy because I liked the cover a common trap for me.Ultimately, the story is about Persephone finding her own path outside of her mother s impressive shadow But it s also about her bond with her mother Persephone loves and respects Demeter, and struggles to find her own calling given that her talents are way different than her mother and she s unable to follow in her footsteps There s no forced marriage plot, which makes for a safer modern children s story I d say this is a middle school YA age range I d lean towards middle school for most of it except for the theme of self discovery identity, which is of an adolescent thing It d work for both groups.

An awkward adaptation of the Greek myth of Persephone in the underworld into a very bland fantasy world setting that mixes modern day diners with sword wielding mages The story is dull, the characters flat, and the art vague and sketchy Meh.

It was lovely, but I think I would ve liked it better if it wasn t Persephone, if he had just made up whole new characters worlds.

Persephone is a very charming story of seeing the other side of a conflict and finding yourself Very loosely based on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone, it takes the names and locations to build a new story of it s own Visually it is very reminiscent of a Ghibli movie, building on a magical world filled with life with characters that seek for the good in things and legends that are larger than life The specific design and illustrative aspects were interesting The drawing style isn t super polished but it didn t need to be It told the story perfectly and was able to capture emotions really well It is a testament that things don t have to be realistic or perfect to tell a dynamic emotive story effectively The locations were absolutely charming.I enjoyed looking at it very much and the story was a pleasant surprise

the winners always make themselves look good, don t they persephone is a very loose retelling of the hades and persephone myth following young girl persephone as she is captured and brought to hades.it s a coming of age story at its center, heavily featuring a mother and daughter relationship as well as a place with a lot of history of war it s filled with absolutely gorgeous art and has a sweet and exciting plot.it s nothing groundbreaking but if it sounds interesting to you I would definitely recommend it read for the reading rush, challenge to read a book with purple on the cover.

Gorgeous art, a very charming info dump right in the beginning, a sweet coming of age tale set to the tune to a mother daughter relationship, adorable characters, and magic

Persephone is an average schoolgirl in the modern seeming kingdom of Eleuesis, who shows a talent for botany and none for sorcery, which would be fine if she wasn t the daughter of the most powerful witch in the land Thirteen years ago, her mother Demeter was a key figure in winning the war against Eleusis s underground neighbor, Hades, after which all contact between the realms was forbidden. That is, until Persephone gets kidnapped by an agent of Hades, and begins to the learn the secrets of the underworld, and her mother begins her search Persephone is a brisk and colorful Miyazaki esque tale by French artist Loic Locatelli Kourwsky that very loosely retells the Greek myth I really enjoyed it, and if I have a complaint, it is the fact that the story is too brisk I really wanted to stay with these characters longer Locatelli Kourwsky s art is very fluid and detailed, aptly conveying both the everyday and otherworldly qualities of the story He s especially talented with portraying action, and I really appreciated the beauty of the restrained colors and delicate line work.I wasn t kidding about the Miyazaki ness Persephone is appropriately plucky and honestly takes extremely well to being thrust into a very perilous and new situation, and Demeter is appropriately badass Other side characters don t get as much development, but show enough intriguing hints of personality I think I would ve enjoyed another volume to flesh them and their arcs out view spoiler For one, WHY DID HE STAY A CAT hide spoiler

Beautiful artwork, interesting characters, a compelling world The plot could have been a bit better but otherwise I m glad this is on my shelf.

Persephone was considered one of the best graphic novels of 2018 It s an inventive retelling of the myth, and one that works rather well and has the traditional palace intrigue There s a lovely cast of characters, including a mage who accidentally turned himself into a cat but now embraces his new identity, and a vibrant world that has been brought to life well via incredibly talented artists It s a fun thing to dive into. The comic would have appealed to me if I had been younger As a teen I likely would have delighted in copying panels from it on my own, or maybe doing some fan art The art style is accessible and lends itself to repetition and interpretation It isn t quite an anime style, but it borders upon it time and again That style, unfortunately, doesn t appeal to me and some of the tropes of that genre appear here and ended up souring me some on the volume.Overall, though, I think that this will appeal to a great number of people It s fun, it s easy, and it builds a good world with its own appropriate mythology and politics In some ways I wanted of the Eleusian s and tensions between their varying kingdoms, maybe see settings there As it was, the settings were what appealed to me most in particular the beautiful rendering of Tartarus and the Titans Awesome stuff. So, don t take my two stars as this being a bad comic Just something that didn t appeal to me.
